Higher officials of the USAID and World Vision visit ORDA Ethiopia based in Bahir Dar on 22 July 2022.

The USAID provides more than ETB 4.5 billion in surge of humanitarian and development assistance to the Amhara region through ORDA Ethiopia.

The former SPIR DFSA program has assisted many people that shows progressive changes of the lives of people. However, the conflict returned back many areas for dire conditions of starvation, death and loss of assets.

Following the war and siege of North & South Wollo, South Gondar and Waghemra food insecure woredas in the Amhara region, persistent access issues have restricted the delivery of aid, increasing child & women protection concerns, humanitarian needs, and emergency levels of malnutrition and food insecurity.

Many families didn’t have fully recovered from the psychological trauma & fear after the devastating effects of the conflict.

ORDA Ethiopia has conducted an assessment of USAID funded social institutions (health posts, schools, irrigation schemes, veterinary posts) and assets of beneficiaries/civilians including their livestock were robbed, fully destructed and demolished and girls & women were brutally raped and killed.

Dr. Alemayehu Wassie Executive Director of ORDA Ethiopia gratefully acknowledged the USAID’s unrestricted support even during the times of difficulty.

He asserted the USAID & World Vision has made unforgettable food aid and saves the lives of millions. The scale of destruction was far beyond imagination, people were targeted for killings, torture and rape. Collateral damage & civil causalities have exposed to psychological disorders for children, women and the elderly, Dr. Alemayehu said.

Currently, SPIR II/Resilience Food Security Activity (RFSA) is being under implementation for an improved food security of vulnerable households in targeted PSNP communities, contributing to a sustained reduction in rural poverty.

ORDA Ethiopia with consortium members (World Vision, Care Ethiopia, IFPRI) are now carrying out rehabilitation/rebuilding of demolished institutions and are treating people, assisting seeds, poultry & shoat for rebuilding their asset besides pivot activities.

After a thorough discussion, the USAID and World Vision senior officials also expressed their desire to strengthen the development activities in the future by looking at the assessment of status of the USAID’s support initiatives and the ongoing projects.
