                   Community Based Greening Program

The main objective of the Greening program is to contribute to the regional forest cover, improvement of the food security, agroecological situation, and forest products and services.

In the last seven years, around 21.85 million seedlings of diverse types had been produced in 6 woreda- Gidan, Gubalafto, Kobo, Habru, Gondar zuria and Dessie city. Due to the preference of the local community, species adaptability, propagation easiness, and other reasons Eucalyptus species take the highest share. Gradually, ORDA gave more emphasis to other economically and environmentally important species (Acacia deccurrens, Cupressus lusitanica, Grevillea robusta, Cordia Africana).

  •  Seedling plantation

Plantation activities were labor-based. Quite a large number of people participated in seedling planting activities. The community was organized into small functional groups (temporary seedling depots) for immediate transportation and plantation on selected plantation sites in subsequent plantation years.

Plantation sites were selected based on the criteria set by Environment and Forest Development program manuals. On the selected sites soil and water conservation activities including pit were well prepared. In the meanwhile after pitting seedling planting activities carried out in subsequent years.

In the last 7 years, about 18.4 million seedlings were planted on an area of 4,040 hectares of degraded lands with area closures of communal, private, and institutional sites.

  • Seedling survival rate

The objective of survival count is to measure the success of plantation operation and planted seedling sustainability. As per the standards, the average second-round seedling survival per year was 37.7 % in 2014, 52% in 2015, 66.6% in 2016, 49.7% in 2017, 75.4% in 2018, and 75% in 2019. The seedling survival rate has been improved over the last years due to improvements in species site match, site preparation, care in seedling transport and planting as well as post plantation management.
