ORDA’s Sustainable Vegetable Value Chain project (SVVC) is benefiting smallholder farmers

SVVC project is benefiting 1,714 smallholder farmers by horticulture developments in four kebeles of Fogera woreda, South Gondar Zone. The project focuses on the development of three vegetable species: cabbage, tomato, and green pepper. Agricultural inputs, hybrid seeds, agriculture extension services, and seasonal marketing information are provided to beneficiary farmers by the project.

Among beneficiary farmers, Ato Nigus Ale is found. He explained that he was growing a high-quality tomato specious on his 0.35 hr irrigable farmland. He is growing vegetables to get quality products with the support of technical persons. He bought a stick, which supports the tomato stem, with a cost of 12 thousand, and Birr 3 thousand cost rope for a tie, and Birr 3 thousand labor cost with a total cost of Birr 18 thousand. According to Ato Niguse, he has estimated to earn Birr 250 thousand while harvesting his tomato.

Ato Niguse explained that he had earned Birr 750 thousand from the sale of his onion production.
