Safe Water to Combat Active Trachoma

The residents of Debre-Sina village in Abayitara kebele of west Belesa woreda, Central Gondar zone, were in a severe shortage of safe drinking water. They were collecting unsafe water from the Lekafia River. Hence, they were exposed to trachoma due to low hygiene and water-borne disease.

W/ro Mulunuesh Gebeyehu, aged 24, lives in Debresina village, Abayitara kebele. She is the mother of one daughter. She faced a hygiene problem while gave birth to her daughter. She was traveling for an hour to fetch water from a river.

ORDA’s CBM German II project is being implemented in three woredas: Ebinat, West & East Belesa woredas. W/ro Mulunesh’s village got shallow well safe water infrastructure by the project.

“CBM German II project alleviates the water shortage problem of our village and enables us to keep our hygiene well. My daughter & I wash our faces daily. We were traveling for an hour to collect water. Now I get water in 5 minutes of travel on foot. Especially, older people are getting safe water nearby village,” she said.

Now the villagers are happy for they got a safe water scheme, and they are curious about the scheme's safety.

In the project intervention 3 woredas of West Belesa, East Belesa & Ebinat woreda, the project built 43 water schemes & 12 Model VIPL constructions at the institution level. In addition, trachoma patients screening for 36,606 beneficiaries, trachoma patients’ treatment by surgery for 2,671 beneficiaries, and trachoma patients’ treatment was given by anti-biotic for 10,212 beneficiaries.
