For the past 38 years (1984-2022), ORDA Ethiopia has been playing an important role in the development of community, i.e. improving livelihoods, health care, sanitation and hygiene, environmental protection and forestry, and providing emergency assistance. The organization has strengthened itself by providing emergency assistance and implementing 5 programs and is implementing its 5th strategic plan for the year 2021-2025.

The organization's 2022 plan execution and 2023 plan familiarization was held on 16 –March- 2022 in Bahir Dar city. According to the report presented at the forum, in the 2022 fiscal year, 44 projects were implemented in 98 woredas of the Amhara region with 5.2 billion birr (1.3 billion birr for development works and 3.94 billion birr for food commodity) received from 24 donor organizations. Thus, it benefited more than 6.24 million beneficiaries of the region through livelihood improvement, development and emergency food aid.

The executive director of ORDA Ethiopia Alemayehu Wassie (Ph.D.) said while opening the workshop that by 2022, ORDA Ethiopia saved more than 6.24 million citizens from humiliation and death by supporting them in the Amhara region. The Director added that if every employee fulfills the assigned responsibility properly, it is possible to make a significant contribution to nation building by changing the lives of beneficiaries.

The 2022 annual plan performance major achievements of the 5 programs are;

1. Forest, Environment and Climate Change program

    • 4.6 million Seedlings were produced.

    • 4.2 million Seedlings were planted on 1,586 hectares of land.

2. Agriculture, Nutrition and Disaster Risk Management Program

    • 5 thousand 368 hybrid seeds were supported for 18 thousand 601 households (F: 5,205);

    • 49 thousand 137 fruit seedlings were supported for 2 thousand 80 households (F: 242);

    • 1.68 million improved varieties of garden vegetables were supported for 7 thousand 283 households;

    • 7 thousand 189 ewe shoats were supported for 2 thousand 316 households (F: 611).

3. WaSH Irrigation and Infrastructure Development Program

      • 221 clean drinking water facilities were constructed and benefited 44,269 households (220,000 people);

      • 4 irrigation schemes constructed, and it irrigates 104 hectares of land;

      • 100 rope pumps were constructed, and it irrigates 13 hectares of land;

     • 27,348 improved pit latrines and 25 model ventilated pit latrines toilets were constructed.

     • 14 thousand 666 trachoma patients were treated and 3 thousand 223 trachoma patients were made a surgery.

4. Gender, Disability Inclusion and Youth Employment

    • 623 youths (F: 356) were given short-term vocational training (1 month - 3 months) in job creation;

    • 3 thousand 793 (F: 1,827) temporary jobs were created;

    • Permanent job opportunities was created for 417 (F: 144) youth.

5. Food Commodity Management & Emergency Program

    • 272 thousand 353.92 metric tons of food aid was supported to more than 6.24 million citizens (F: 2.95 million)

Finally, the 2023 plan was presented and discussed at the workshop. According to the presentation, 38 projects will be implemented in 134 woredas of the region. A budget of nearly 6.5 billion birr is allocated to turn the plan in to action (that is 4,884,300,512 billion birr for food commodity support and 1,520,192,006 billion birr for development activities).

The workshop was attended by ORDA Ethiopia's higher officials and concerned experts, project office managers, coordinators and concerned experts.
