Landscape restoration using church forest relics project regional familiarization workshop conducted on 20/5/2022 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

The project aims for an improved conservation and restoration of forest resources through forest relics of Ethiopian Orthodox church for healthy environment and sustainable livelihoods funded by Cartier nature with a total budget of 1,200,000 USD to be implemented in Estie and Dera woredas which lasts from 1 February 2022 -31/ December 2024.

Alemayehu Wassie (Dr.), Executive Director notes that ORDA Ethiopia has carried out a greening program initiative with the support of the Ethiopia government from 1998-2018. It has developed 18,067 hectares of forest lands and handed over to local communities in various woredas of the Amhara region.

The organization has also rich experience in biodiversity conservation that saved 149,594 ha of natural forest which protected as a green belt through participatory forest management approach in the buffer zone of sub-Sahara desert of West Gondar Zone bordering to Sudan.

These all practices indicate that the organization has excellence in natural resource management, and biodiversity conservation and protection. As a result, thousands of households improved their livelihoods with production and marketing of non-timber forest products.

The landscape restoration using church forest relics project in Dera and Estie districts aimed to progress towards to Increase climate change resilience and well-being of rural communities in Amhara region in the long term.

The project’s goal is to improve the conservation and restoration of forest resources through forest relics of Ethiopia Orthodox church for healthy environment and sustainable livelihoods. In order to attain the overall objective, the project is expected to achieve the following outcomes:

• Improved the sustainable management and conservation of church forests, its biodiversity and landscape restoration

• Benefited the rural communities from ecosystem goods and services that support their livelihoods and

• The existing forest policy and experience of church forest protections properly promoted and the implementation capacity of stakeholders enhanced.

The project objective will be achieved through using implementations of three key strategies to address the identified challenges and for successful implementation of the project. The strategies are ; forest landscape restoration approach, Promotion of incentive mechanisms for forest landscape restoration with aim to diversify livelihood option and reduce burden on existing natural forests, and policy advocacy and capacity building for targeted communities, community based organizations, churches and government stakeholders.

The project ultimately works on natural regeneration and biodiversity conservation of 60 hectare forests, building of conservation walls of church forest perimeter will enable natural regeneration and biodiversity conservation of 60 hectare forests, preparing of participatory land use plan, 2.4 million seedling productions, and 1.98 million planting of seedlings on 605 hectares (200 hectare communal land and 405 hectare agroforestry practices) and undertaking management operation in all plantation sites

It also benefits 130 HHs on honey production, 80 HHs on shoat fattening, 75 households on poultry production, 20 youth members on seedling production and 83 HHs on micro irrigation water option in the targeted communities.
