      Construction of Ribb Irrigation and drainage Project underway

          Ribb Irrigation

Ribb Irrigation and drainage Project, which is owned by federal irrigation development commission, has a potential to over irrigate 3 thousand 7 hundred hectares of land. ORDA Ethiopia’s Abay construction PLC, with a total budget of 1.32 billion birr, is carrying out the project work. Excavation and clearance of 4.7 km of main canal is about to complete. The Lower Rib Irrigation catchment in in its first phase irrigates 2 thousand 800 hectares and 900 hectares of land in in Fogera and Libo Kemkem Woredas respectively.

Alemayehu Wassie (Ph.D), Executive Director of ORDA Ethiopia, said the project is huge and complex and requires everyone’s effort and support from both sides of the government and implementer. He also called on zonal & woreda stakeholders including the community to offer their hands for cooperate.

The project underways two major sub-canals from the main canal, the 14.4 km canal on the left and the 9.2 km right canal. The lower Rib Irrigation canal on left-side of the catchment in its first phase irrigates 2 thousand 800 hectares in Fogera woreda and 900 hectares of land in Libo Kemkem.

Following the completion of the right canal, beneficiaries in Fogera Woreda is expected to harvest lowland wheat, onions and other vegetables.
