ORDA Ethiopia funded by GIZ in collaboration with the strategic partner WHH has started to implement the project in Debre Elias and Womberma Woredas of EAST and West Gojjam Zones of Amhara region of Ethiopia.

Formation and strengthening of Amhara MAP at Regional level as the central collective platform is formally established to initiate policy dialogue and advocacy, knowledge sharing and/or standard setting on land governance and responsible agricultural investment (RAI) in the Amhara Regional State.

While opening the workshop, Alemayehu Wassie (Ph.D), Executive Director of ORDA noted that livelihood and social harmony in rural and urban communities anywhere depend on access to and proper utilization of natural resources, land in particular. However, in recent years, the excessive use of these natural resources has led to resource depletion, loss of biodiversity, conflicts and internal displacements he said. Driving forces such as population growth, urbanization, the misuse of land and water resources as well as insufficient knowledge and technical capacities to design, plan and implement proper land use plans are worsening the problem he added.

Cognizant of this, Alemayehu (Dr.) reminded the Regional MAP Core Groups to carry out a thorough analysis and evaluation of the rural land tenure system as an important factor in shaping the socio-economic structure related to land.

Dr. Retta Menberu and Firiehiwot Yibeltal presented more on the project details about land and land related issues and a thorough discussion was held among participants.

To address these complex and diverse land constraints, attendees composed from GOs, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Community Based Organizations (CBOs), the Academia, Research Institutes, Private Sectors, Investors are highly encouraged to work in harmony and achieve the intended objectives.
