ORDA develops 172 safe water schemes & benefits more than 54 thousand people in North Shoa Zone

The organization for Rehabilitation & Development in Amhara (ORDA) develops 172 safe water schemes which benefit more than 54 thousand people in Siyadebirana Wayu, Basona Worana and Angolelana Tera woredas of North Shoa Zone of Amhara region from 2019 to 2020.

In 2019 alone, ORDA built 84 water schemes (83 shallow boreholes & a spring development) and 3 ventilated pit latrin which benefited more than 25 thousand people in Siyadebirana Wayu & Basona Worana woredas.

In 2020, ORDA carried out 88 water schemes (83 shallow boreholes & 5 spring development) and 4 ventilated pit latrin which benefited close to 29 thousand people in Siyadebirana Wayu, Basona Worana & Angolelana Tera woredas. Hygiene and sanitation awareness trainings were also given to bring about change of behavior in order to create a healthy & productive citizen.

ORDA through a fund secured from Charity Water benefited 54 thousand 126 people who have been suffering much in water shortage for longer years. Water schemes will serve from 20 to 25 years if users together with concerned government bodies ensure for its proper management and sustainability

North Shoa Zone Water and Energy Department Head, Ato Kibruyisfa said the problem of safe drinking water has always been a basic public issue of woredas in North Shoa Zone. He said it was unable to answer all community requests as the budget is too small secured from the side of the government. Acknowledging ORDA and the funding organization Charity Water, he calls for respective woredas to work in harmony with ORDA & Charity Water.

Along with the supply of safe drinking water, hygiene and sanitation activities in the zone, ORDA funded by Charity Water demonstrated for a genuine partnership in combating COVID-19 pandemic. ORDA handed over a worth of over 4.7 Million Birr equipments like water scheme maintenance tools (1.1 Million Birr), alcohol, sanitizer, face-mask, liquid soap, a 20 liter jerrycan, hand gloves, infrared thermometer, megaphones/sound amplifiers to aware people in rural kebeles.

Generally, ORDA has provided various materials which worths over 43 million birr through its projects implemented in the region to prevent the spread of Corona virus/ COVID-19 pandemic.
