FNS/ Project carrying out SIS to benefit farmers

Multidimensional Food and Nutrition Security project of ORDA is on the way to complete construction of three small irrigation schemes that played a major role in boosting productivity of agriculture and livestock, manager of the project, Ato Dessalegn Alem said.

According to the manager, the project has completed 90% of irrigation schemes with 17 million birr in East Estie, Farta and Fogera woredas which can potentially irrigate over 144 hectares of land and benefit 407 farmers.

The 3-year duration of the project with 66 million financial support is secured from German government, German Agro action and the regional government to implement project activities in 20 kebeles. The project is working extensively to ensure food security and improve the livelihood of farmers. The project has delivered improved crop varieties and livestock breeds to farmers, started to strengthen saving and loan groups, created and engaged unemployed youths & ultra poor women jobs like oxen fattening, dairy and other income generating activities.

Gashaw Engidaw, Water Resources Development Program, irrigation engineer claimed the rocky landscape and poor infrastructure ultimately challenged development of irrigation projects in the areas but it was achieved within 4 months through active community participation. The project also created temporary jobs for more than 5 hundred youths. The schemes will be opened within short time for utilization of farmers.

Farmer Tsega Nigatie is a resident of East Estie woreda Recha kebele. He witnessed a few farmers used to harvest using River Meterey traditionally although they earned less production. But now he is expecting the completion of the scheme with pleasure to start irrigating.
