                                               Executive Director’s Message

Honorable people in Amhara Region and Ethiopians, esteemed donors, and partners, beneficiaries and ORDA staff, I would like to congratulate you on the occasion of celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA).

I would also like to express my heartfelt pleasure on behalf of all ORDA management, employees and myself while I am attending and forwarding message on the celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Organization for Rehabilitation and Development in Amhara (ORDA).

When ORDA was established 35 years ago - in 1984, it aims to solve problems of people starvation and drought in the North Eastern part of the country caused by civil war, and it rescued the victims from death and migration.

The organization is being engaged in integrated rural development activities to reply the query of beneficiaries since 1997. As a result, by supporting them, it has enabled food insecure communities and impoverished households to secure their food consumption and to create wealth.

Now ORDA is running its 4th strategic plan to be implemented from 2016 to 2020. It is working through four pillar programs which can assure sustainable economic development to cope with the desired result.

ORDA’s four pillar programs can be mentioned as Environment and Forest Development Program; Agriculture and Disaster Risk Reduction Program; WASH and Irrigation Program; and Youth Enterprise and Private Sector Development Program. Also, the programs critically mainstreams cross cutting issues (Gender development, HIV/AIDS prevention, empowering persons with disabilities, securing environmental sustainability). Hence it is working with 24 donors, and 55 woredas are addressed in implementing 32 comprehensive development projects those benefit 1.7 million people in the Amhara region. The organization has planned to address above 3 million people at the end of 2020.

In general ORDA is a successful nongovernmental development organization which has 35 years concrete experience in rehabilitation and development activities in the region.

ORDA created partnership with international nongovernmental donors to generate fund for relief and development. Also, it is strengthening its finance source by organizing social enterprises which can be sources of its funding from their dividend, and these financing strategies will capacitate ORDA to run its development and relief activities. It results ORDA can have reliable stand to reply the query of the region’s forsustainable development

Among ORDA achievements in its charitable activities, its success in Forest development is greatly outshined. It contributed 4% of the plantation forest coverage of the region. For the sake of such result, ORDA has been awarded as selected the best performer of national green development program in 2014.

In addition, good results have been registered in improving basin development, in soil and water conservation, biodiversity conservation, and in terms of making degraded lands and common lands free from grazing to rehabilitate.

In developing potable water and irrigation infrastructure, ORDA enabled beneficiary farmers to produce twice a year and improve their livelihood. This is why ORDA has been awarded as best performer in potable water infrastructure development and in sanitation and hygiene works nationally in 2009.

ORDA enabled beneficiaries to secure their food consumption and to improve their nutrition in its agricultural development and risk reduction management. Particularly, the extensive land acquisition and utilization technology developed by Rwanda has created dramatic improvements and rehabilitation of highland areas and increasing product and productivity in recent time.

To increase productivity, ORDA contributed in supplying improved seeds, hybrid fruits and vegetable seeds for poor farmers. In line with this, farmers are promoted to animal fattening by creating awareness of fodder producing and management technique. And also it is being done to let them access market link and participate in village economic and social associations to save money monthly and to have borrowing facility.

ORDA’s sustainable development activities have created households which secured their food consumption. Because of that, the organization has been awarded at the 4th and 6th national quality awards. And internationally, it has been awarded a cup and certificate from a European quality and research association.

We need to strengthen our partnership with donors over the next years. We must also invite new organizations that can work together later. We need to create ORDA's income generating activities as a way to make the fund a viable income generator. As a result, our projects will be able to support the development of the region in a sustainable way.

In addition, I like to thank the donors, government partners and the entire public for supporting us with the financial, material and training projects that the organization has undertaken.

Thank you!
